Video management software is licensed in one unit everywhere: the channel. Cameras come and go, servers get replaced, sites expand — and through all of it the commercial question is only ever “how many channels is this system licensed for?” That question deserves a licensing mechanism as simple as it is.
Channel counts as records
On a KeyNub the channel count is a record on the key, read by your VMS at startup. Expanding a site from 32 to 48 channels is one vendor-authorised record write — sold over the phone, applied without touching the recorder’s software stack. Analytics add-ons — ANPR, people counting, the deep-learning detectors — are further records on the same key, and their trained models can ship encrypted so a copied install carries no analytics at all.
Surveillance networks are closed by law and by sense
Camera networks are segregated as a matter of both security practice and privacy regulation — a recorder that phones home is a liability in a GDPR conversation, and many sites simply have no route out. A KeyNub in the recorder’s USB port verifies locally, needs no exception in anyone’s firewall policy, and gives the privacy assessment its shortest possible answer: the licensing component processes no personal data and makes no connections.
Integrators, not end users, run these systems
VMS is bought through integrators who install, service and upgrade hundreds of sites — and who have no patience for licensing tied to accounts or hardware fingerprints. A key is the integrator model: it survives server replacement (move the key), it transfers cleanly when a site changes hands (hand over the key), and a service technician can confirm the license state with the vendor’s CLI tool in one command.

Where the VMS ships as an appliance, the key rides inside the case: the appliance is licensed as a unit, image and hardware can be refreshed independently, and manufacturing provisions each unit’s key with your vendor authorisation on the production line.
